Please do take a moment to check out the โ€œdefining our valuesโ€ page on the intranet where you will see links to some fabulous short videos starring a number of our Colart colleagues.

Well done to Gareth and Chanel for presenting what our values mean in such a visual way and thank you to everyone who took part.

Does the colour purple really exist?

Iโ€™m generally interested in the relationship between science and art, especially colour theory and perception. Stumbled across a segment from a lecture which defines that from a physics standpoint the colour purple simply does not exist. There are no purple photons in the spectrum, it’s a colour created by our brains as a reaction to mixed signals in the absence of green. From a physics perspective a colour wheel is also illogical, as the wavelength of light is linear – so humans again created purple to bridge the cyclical gap and created a scientifically artificial colour in doing so. Perceptively does this mean all of us see purple as a different colour?

    • wow Ben…really interesting….I’ve always thought we all see all colours in a different way.
For example my husband and I can never agree on how to describe a colour 🤣

    • I saw this insta post too but must admit I didn’t give it as much thought that I feel it now deserves having read your thoughts. I’m up for an informal discussion about this sometime. I’m sure there are people in our business that have some interesting thoughts and opinions that could contribute to a very interesting and thought provoking conversation???

    • @janebcolart-com I know exactly where you’re coming from -same debates in my house! Greenee yellow vs yellowee green is a common one. I think the same about taste too – We may both like chocolate does it really taste the same? Deep questions we can never answer ๐Ÿ™‚

@gareth-meredithcolart-com haha I think we share the same insta feed. I’m sure there’s a marketing opportunity tucked away in this concept too…

    • chuck in the debate on khaki and then it gets really confusing!!

    • The color spectrum that we commonly refer to is based on the visible light spectrum, which ranges from red to violet (ultra violet). Each color in the spectrum corresponds to a different wavelength of light, with red having the longest wavelength and violet having the shortest.

However, purple is a bit different. It’s not associated with a single wavelength of light like the other colors. Instead, it’s what’s called a “non-spectral color.” Purple is created when our eyes perceive a mix of red and blue light, which are at opposite ends of the visible spectrum. Our brains interpret this mix of red and blue light as the color purple. Just shows how brain is too clever. One note though, one must not confuse purple and violet- in science they are different. ๐Ÿ™‚

    • @cris-cosgravecolart-com I love this response with the detail exemplifying the unity between science and art

World Health & Safety Day 2024 Kidderminster

We decided to have a delayed date for the world H&S day at DC7 but it was really worth the wait. We held some interactive games where the site was divided into 2 teams. There were 2 games, the first one was โ€˜Spot the Hazardsโ€™ on various photos where teams were awarded 1 point for every hazard they spot and bonus points of 5 were awarded if they spotted something I never. We used real employees for this so a big thanks to all that participated โ€“ also thanks to Alex Ou for sharing this idea with me. The second game was โ€˜Fact or Fictionโ€™ where we provided photos (again using employees) of different incidents, some were โ€˜factโ€™ – real incidents that were reported in the last 5 years, and some were fiction. All scenarios were carried out in a safe manner with machinery isolated etc.

We also asked employees to fill out a feedback questionnaire to see how they feel we are doing as a site for H&S, this included a question to select what safety maturity level people thought we were at DC7. UK H&S stats from The HSE for 2023 have also been shared on monitors around the sight to raise awareness of H&S incidents in the workplace.

The teams really enjoyed taking part and the energy in the room was amazing. The main feedback was that they wished the games were longer. Nothing like a good team exercise and a bit of healthy competition. Thanks to all at DC7 for joining in and making Health and Safety fun.
