The Wall 5 months, 2 weeks agoThis past Saturday my wife and I joined in on the Clean Ocean Action beach sweep in our town to pick up litter. In 3.5 hours, we alone gathered an astonishing 350 plastic water bottle caps and that was just some of what we collected. Clean Ocean Action keeps a tally of what’s picked up and in 2024 over 49,000 bottle caps were gathered from New Jersey beaches. The sad part to me is that litter doesn’t have to happen. You also don’t have to wait for an organised event to make a difference. We bought an extending grabber tool that we can take on walks to pick up litter. Yes, it’s really gross picking up other people’s refuse but it feels good to do our part.

The Wall 5 months, 2 weeks agoWhilst in Chicago and Montreal we visited Michaels\’ stores – it is always worth visiting stores that are not close to home, you see new and different things. It was interesting to see the new focus on Party and Knit & Sew shops in Michaels since the closure of Party City and Joann. There was also some great placement for Snazaroo in the run up to Halloween – by the cash registers, and with Snazaroo brand global assets in use. Well done all involved on this – Global assets, made in Minehead, NA assembled in DC4, great teamwork.

Michaels is looking great in store, Steve. Fantastic to see them take the initiative on the party side of things with Snaz. And the Michaels x Joann knit and sew shop looks so good that I’m tempted to take it up as a hobby! …
-
The new ‘store within store’ isn’t perfect, Charlotte – Michaels have to dress the aisles and fixtures they already have, which are not great, as they can be scaled up vs something more radical in design. That said, it is a step in the right direction for trying to make Michaels a more inspirational destination. …

The Wall 5 months, 2 weeks agoWhilst visiting Blick and DeSerres last week it was great to see the stores in good shape, hear that we continue to outperform competitors, and see some Snazaroo near the cash registers for an impulse buy.

The Wall 5 months, 2 weeks agoOur North America Monthly Update meeting in DC4 welcomed Romain, Gail, Sara and Ajita (all visiting the US this week). They informed us of recent commercial gains and challenges, answered employee questions, and put a spotlight on topics that will drive growth in all markets through Q4 into 2026.

Thank you for sharing Duane. It was great to have our visitors this week, and fantastic engagement all week from our friends and colleagues in NJ.…

And to be clear for anyone wondering…….we had a site wide shutdown of all equipment in the DC 15 minutes ahead of the Town Hall – meaning we did not need to wear our PPE. In fact, one of the things we talked about was DC4 passing 1 year since our last accident – well done to all on the Piscataway site!…

The Wall 5 months, 2 weeks agoOur new shredder machine in the North America DC, which turns packing boxes into filling materials, inspired Jimmy for today’s brand engagement “Sustainability meets Creativity”. Attendees used the material to create their own “plants” and decorated them with bright colors using the various Liquitex paint ranges.

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."

And another thing I forgot to mention. Clean Ocean Action reports that ever since the New Jersey ban on plastic bags they have seen a steady decline of them collected during beach sweeps. Laws like that do make a difference.…
Well done Jimmy, very nice initiative …
