The Wall 2 years, 2 months agoThis is an edited version of a letter of thanks received through our W&N website from a 94-year-old user of our products, which I wanted to share with you. ย
Please read the below.
I wanted to write a glowing testimonial for Winsor & Newton paints.
I am 94 and think I have used your water colours ever since I began making pictures when I was a little girl at school.
What I wanted to tell you was that when I went to my box of paints recently, because I wanted to paint newspaper in which to wrap a bulky present for my 4-year-oldย great grandson, I found that my tubes of W & N watercolours had become hard. Not surprising, of course, after all those years of not being used, but I was disappointed. However, I cut into the tubes and laid them in water.
They rewarded me! It took quite a bit of persuasion, but I extracted the solid paints, broke them up and dissolved them in water, and was able to slosh them around and produce sufficient colour to paint designs on four sheets of newsprint. Not only that, but the paints behaved themselves beautifully. Any raw colour I got on my fingers washed off easily, any of it which ended up on my kitchen bench also washed off without trouble, and the colours were still fresh and true.
Thatโs all, but I hope you are pleased that I let you know.
Keep on keeping on. I hope you are still high on artistsโ need lists.

The Wall 2 years, 2 months agoOne of my favourite living artists, Mitchell Johnson, recently posted this quote which really captured my attention.
I suppose this resonates well with the MostLovedWorkplace concept… as an accountant at Colart, replace “studio” with “office”, and “colours” with “excel” and that dopamine hit is flowing to me!ย

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."

Two things to note here – the paints ‘behaving themselves beautifully’ after what sounds like at least 80 years (!) plus the commitment of someone who still loves to paint at 94, and is generous enough to write to tell us. I can’t really think of another sector where these two things would come together. We have an audience of highly engaged users (and they are not all talking to us on Instagram). We also have a responsibility to share stories like these, to inspire younger artists who are finding it challenging to keep on creating as life gets busy and the cost of living increases. Thanks for sharing Hayley – I will email you with a response for this dedicated Winsor & Newton artist.…
Great feedback. Echoing Jo a little here but love how the painter talks about the paint in a humanistic way…. what a great brand voice. Both ‘behaving themselves beautifully’ and ‘they rewarded me!’ are fantastic expressions of the personality of paint, a great demonstration of the potential for art products to go beyond an inanimate commodity. A refreshing view against a ‘live fast, buy quick, dispose when done society’. …
