The Wall 2 years, 4 months agoThree weeks ago, some of you will remember an email I sent telling you about the significant challenge that my son, Jake, was planning to attempt. On Saturday 9th December he left his student house in Bath and started running home to our house in Horsham, West Sussex, 202km away. By Sunday night he had completed 175km, finishing the remainder today. For those of you familiar with Strava (running app) I have included photos of how far he went on each day.
He chose to run in support of St Mungo’s homelessness charity and has been massively encouraged by the donations that have come in so far. If any of you would like to donate to this wonderful cause here is the link to his ‘Just Giving’ page. https://connect.garmin.com/modern/course/234978732

The Wall 2 years, 4 months agoIn the UK this week we worked across audiences to talk about pigments and dyes and the integrity of making in all our brands. We were invited to SCP to show the designers and architects they work with, that includes; Jasper Morrison, Stanton Williams, Donna Wilson and Matthew Hilton, colour curation at Winsor and Newton. It was a great chance to show the science and colour theories that all artists and designers explore to such a prestigious design audience. Huge thank you to Mark Cann and Andrew Carter for their brilliant contributions.
We also delivered our last online training to Cass store staff . These run throughout the year specific to the USP of our brands and not the categories. This week we looked at all things metallic, optimising the opportunities of working in this hybrid way in order to reach all store staff across the UK.

Really engaging, personable and educational event at SCP! The set-up was lovely and intimate, allowing for real conversations between the designers around Winsor & Newton which is always a plus. Well done as always!
And regarding Cass trainings; these have been absolutely invaluable in keeping the store teams engaged and educated on our brands and continue differentiating ourselves from our competitors. You did an incredible job in delivering the training program this year. …

Being able to demonstrate science and colour theories to practising artists and creative professionals establishes our undisputed quality credentials in the market – especially as we are now one of very few organisations that actually maintains and updates this knowledge – most educational courses no longer include it. We could not do this without your efforts Steph – such a big help from a communications and marketing point of view. This looks like a really good event!…
-
Thank you Jo, being seen as partners of choice in both these contexts does indeed reflect the credibility of what we make…

The Wall 2 years, 4 months agoLove this from the Turner prize winner, Jesse Darling….
In his acceptance speech, Darling also spoke up for the power of teaching children art in schools, and said Conservative governments had sent the message that self-expression and culture were \”only for particular kinds of people from particular socio-economic backgrounds\”.
\”Don\’t buy in. It\’s for everyone,\” he said.

I liked the photos of his art in the article. Very powerful pieces and topic…
-
I get so frustrated with the ongoing attack on the arts in education….research shows as a fact that kids that can read music see their maths grades improve – and yet many politicians choose to think the solution is more maths lessons and less music! It’s crazy.…
-
His speech was excellent and highlights the disparity in education that manifests itself in the ratios of students going into higher education and being able to afford funding an art education both in fees and materials…

The Wall 2 years, 4 months agoLast week Jen Bonaccolta, Anne Zayatz and I volunteered for a day at the Community Food Bank of New Jersey. We spent the day packing and providing food for a long line of individuals and families in need. This day was a great reminder for us that there are many people struggling with food insecurity throughout the year. If you have the opportunity, please think of donating to your local food bank!

What a great cause, so important at this time of year ❤ …

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
