The Wall 2 years, 8 months agoI want to thank Tim DePack for acting in a sustainable way when preparing for the recent Michaels management meeting. Tim had three banners with outdated header copy and instead of ordering new banners, he recycled the existing ones by cutting off the top portion of each banner and rebuilding them as slightly shorter banners. The recycled banners were successfully used at the managers meeting. Great job Tim!

The Wall 2 years, 8 months agoA great visit to Kidderminster yesterday so great to see the team there. The sustainability tree is an acorn for 2023! @Lizakindon has collaborated with a local gin company to shred their cardboard, which would normally be recycled, and use it to pack our boxes! We hope to see the savings soon, great idea and thinking outside the ‘box’ (literally) 🙂 The seconds from Le Mans continue to arrive and Liza and her team have sorted ready for our charity orders. Remember if you know of any charities that could use our products please find the form on the sustainability page. The art installation has made a real difference as you step in to the warehouse, great work @janlennon!

Nice! How can we measure the contribution from the Gin-co collaboration from a VCM angle, beyond financial savings? I don’t think it fits obviously into any of the parameters but feels like something that should be recognised as a contribution, a great example of where we’re looking to reduce waste beyond the realms of our ownership/responsibility. …
-
Good point Ben, we would be reducing consumption of consumables, not sure if we include that in COGS, certainly worth looking at through the VCM angle. The seconds we receive from Le Mans would potentially be classed as hazardous waste so that is a reduction, which is a key metric in the VCM.

-
Interesting, I suppose the packing materials could fall under an indirect waste reduction (it’s not our waste being reduced but we’re contributing to total waste reduction surely, could we argue this?) Feels like a double +ve for VCM, positive on net income (lower costs from reduced purchases of packing material) and +ve waste reduction. Sometimes VCM items can play against each other (need to invest financially to find the economic, environmental, social impacts) but this feels like a win on both sides.…

Fantastic collaboration really wonderful on so many levels, not least because you are also creating a pipeline for charities that in turn reach our target audiences…

The partnership with the local gin company is particularly exciting (not only because gin is awesome!) because, as well as the sustainability/cost saving aspects, it will hopefully begin to raise our profile with other local businesses and the community in general. I think this will lead to more opportunities down the line. Great work Liza…

The Wall 2 years, 8 months agoedding and Colart made their debut at the NY Now show last week. Thousands of buyers attended the show, which features Home, Jewelry, Accessories, Gift and Lifestyle brands. The edding booth was situated with stationery and gift brands. We sold into a variety of art stores, galleries, gifteries and stationery stores. We are excited to see the edding brand branching out to new retailers, some of which had interest in carrying other Colart products too. Thank you to Ryan Testa and Dana Sherer in the booth as well as our edding partner Olga Oggioni.

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
