The Wall 2 years, 8 months agoWhile visiting our NA business last week, I got to visit a trade show (on which Ryan and Mary-Ellen were working hard to grow our edding turnover), visited stores of many retail partners (and some possible partners to be) with Sarah, got to meet the teams in the office, witness a local town hall, tour the DC (thank you Carlos) and check out a real Paint & Sip franchise on Thursday evening. Thank you to all (including Kim and Ellie for the Liquitex merch) for the warm welcome. What do you think, should we quit our day job yet, or keep practising our ratio and colour blending techniques?

The Wall 2 years, 8 months agoI’m currently reading The Creative Act: A Way of Being by music producer Rick Rubin. Many of you will know Rubin from his work with The Beastie Boys, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Jay-Z and many more artists from last 40 years. In this book he breaks down his thoughts on the creative process, self doubt and the Buddhist concept of Papancha aka “mental chatter”. I particularly like the line “adversity is part of the process”, because it is.
Not all, but a great deal of it, resonates with me so far and I think it’s a good read for anyone who wants to better understand the artistic process and cultivate their own creativity.

“On connection” by Kae Tempest is another great book about how creativity can help to cultivate self-awareness
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/54874365-on-connection
Both suggest creativity goes beyong “art”. You don’t need to be a good guitar player ( Rick didnt play any instruments) or be confident on the use of brushes and paints to be creative and bring creativity to your life.

hi Jimmy, have you read Think Like an Artist: and Lead a More Creative, Productive Life by Will Gompertz. It’s along similar lines to your book and I’m sure it will resonate. Just as we aim to inspire every artist, every artist can certainly inspire us!…

The Wall 2 years, 8 months agoLondon Hub people are currently using their Community Days “in bulk”. As with last year, 23 Colart people are helping to support one of our key charity partners in the UK, Hospital Rooms. Both offsite and at the Hauser & Wirth gallery, Saville Row our efforts will be part of the main exhibition space which will launch this Wednesday 16th August. We even got to meet and spend time with the amazing and beautiful artist Sutapa Biswas.
If you are in London or happening to be visiting then then launch event is at:
Hauser & Wirth, 23 Saville Row W1S 2ET – it’s free from 6-8pm on Wednesday 16th August.
The opening will feature performances by mezzo soprano Joanna Harries and cellist Lucas Robson at 18:30 and 19:30 in collaboration with National Opera Studio and students from the South West London Recovery College.
A multi-sensory exhibition drawing directly from artist programs within NHS mental health services. Featuring mixed media artworks and site specific installations.
P.S. and taking my “Gareth hat” off and putting my “Comms hat” on … watch out for more comms featuring Colart volunteers and Hospital Rooms people.

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
