The Wall 6 months, 2 weeks agoI had the pleasure of meeting the New York winner of The International Art Prize, presented by Winsor & Newton and Paul Smith’s Foundation, Cecilia Lamptey-Botchway this evening at the NYC Paul Smith store. We were joined by one of the judges, Larry Ossei-Mensah. It was wonderful to meet them and see the artwork up close!

Chris, I was at Manufacturers’ Village recently and saw those pots in 2 or 3 studios. They are clearly still loved and cherished by the artistic community….I am sure there is stil demand for them as a sellable item/GWP (maybe made in Stoke on Trent!)…..but probably bigger priorities in the Refocus for Growth first!…

I also prefer vintage Hockney. I respect digital artists but his paintings with paint are more impressive than his paintings he makes on an ipad (in my view) …. I wonder how what his own views are? A W&N editorial on this could be interesting …

nice short article about his use of digital tools throughout his career – interesting that the portability of art materials versus an i pad – portability and ease of carrying art materials was a theme that came out in the hackathon…

The Wall 6 months, 2 weeks agoYesterday was the opening of the inaugural exhibition Group Portrait 2024 which launched the Hands On m2 Gallery in Kakuma Refugee Camp, Kenya in August 2024, produced by Hands On Art Workshops. The exhibition featured a hand-painted self-portrait on A4 paper or as a cardboard cut-out from each student in the Hands On Art workshops programme, working in Art Clubs and a community learning centre across Kakuma Refugee Camp & Kalobeyei Settlement.
Group Portrait 2024 is now restaged at m2 gallery in London until November 9th Kings Grove Peckham SE15 to showcase and celebrate the talent and artwork of students in Kakuma Refugee Camp and Kalobeyei Settlement and mark the 10th anniversary of Hands On Art Workshops.
This was all created thanks to Colart’s continuing support with materials donations. Huge thanks to Ajita Chamberlain, Sara Brennan, Jane Beeston, Liza Kindon and Jan Lennon for making it possible. UNHCR Education officer from Kakuma, Joy Marakha, hosted a Q&A with artist Lisa Milroy who created the project and Gallery founder Julia Manheim. It was attended by an audience of incredible artists and wonderful to hear them voice how much they appreciate our brands. You can also see it in the portraits!
To learn more about Hands On Art workshops there is a beautiful publication, copies available at the hub; or, visit the UNHCR and UCL website.

This is wonderful to see the fruits of your efforts Steph and a team collaboration to inspire every artist with the donation of charity paints, lovely to see so many enjoying and engaging with art. …

Definitely would not have been possible without everyone’s incredible help at Kiddie. Thank you! what was amazing was to hear the audiences appreciation for our materials and how we are supporting emerging artists.…

Such a lovely afternoon, very inspirational how much passion you ladies have for the project, and what it means to the children in the refugee camp is obvious in their art. Lots of appreciation for Colart 🙂 from everyone…

I agree Fatima….great to see you there and I know you joined me in feeling very proud of what Colart is doing to support Kakuma and of the role Steph is playing.
I was also blown away by two facts given: 1. there are over 300,000 people in the camp of which over a third are children (and these numbers are rising) 2. the underlying spirit in the camp is one of HOPE and potential.
Art is therefore playing an incredible foundation to this spirit in the young people.🙌👏🎨🧑🎨

Fantastic, long-standing initiative Steph. Congratulations & amazing work to you & all. And I agree with Guy, the self-portraits are incredibly powerful.…

Thank you for all your comments and worth noting that the ages of the students varies enormously given the gaps in their educations owing to conflict. These workshops seek to build trajectories for art education and employability and all our coaches are graduates from the camps and the project managers artists who live in the camps.…

The Wall 6 months, 2 weeks agoInteresting move from Ikea! Reverse surge prices. Surge pricing is common in services like Uber and concert tickets ( it costs more when services are in demand – Oasis gig tickets made this famous in the UK)
Ikea flipped this on its head and has done reverse surge pricing. The cost of an umbrella is cheaper when its raining and most in demand and more expensive when not needed, sunny.
Love the attention this has grabbed but more importantly actually helps consumers out in the time of need!
How could Colart do reverse surge?
-
💡great idea – I have been known to pay over the odds for an umbrella when desperate…. …

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
