The Wall 3 years, 1 month agoThe quality and quantity of sleep (like anything in life) do not always go hand in hand.
What I learned from Professor Matthew Walker, Phd and worldwide expert on sleep related research, is that there are three different chronotypes, and this is determined in your DNA.
In our society, we reward and favour morning type people. These people hit the gym at 6 am and are in the office by 8, having finished half their to do lists before the first meeting starts. For years I have been telling myself \”I just need to get up earlier\”. Fact of life: maybe it is not my innate nature to get up at 6. And maybe it is time to stop beating myself up over it.
If you have 7 minutes to spare (in your lunch break or while walking the dog), this youtube video summarizes the research very well: https://youtu.be/aDVlq120MnQ Sleeping according to your chronotype will get you the best quality sleep.
Quantity wise, we should all try to get between 7-8 hours a night, even if you have trained yourself to sleep 6 hours or less. Not getting enough sleep is now being proven to be linked to all kinds of health issues, from diabetes, high blood pressure and anxiety/depression to dementia and Alzheimer\’s.
Also, lack of (qualitative) sleep is calculated to cost the US economy a loss of $ 411 billion annually. So if we want to become more productive and efficient, understanding and prioritizing our sleep might be one way to get ahead.

Very seredipitous – the linkedin learning course highlighted by Jimmy (below), also covers the importance of energy in effective communication and how that’s linked to sleep, time of day and your own unique quirks!…

This is really good Jasper. This type of research is great because for so long teenagers have been labelled as lazy when we now realize that they simply need more sleep than adults. And in your case I agree that you shouldn’t beat yourself up if you operate better by sleeping in later than someone else. I’ve also realized with my own sleep issues that the anxiety of worrying about getting enough sleep can exacerbate the issue.…
-
easier said than done to not worry about losing sleep, if you’re lying in bed and all you can think about is how to fall asleep! He has a podcast you might be interested in https://www.sleepdiplomat.com/podcast in which he talks about all topics, including insomnia , dreams, the effect of caffeine and alcohol on sleep quality and quantity, on taking naps, etc. I haven’t listened to his podcasts yet (but think they’ll be great).

Thank you so much for posting this. I’ve been struggling with getting a good night’s sleep lately and couldn’t understand why I needed more than other family members. …
-
There are self tests you can do which will help you give an indication of what kind of chronotype you might be (as always, I do not believe these tests are 100% accurate, but combined with your own experience, it can get accurate enough).
https://chronotype-self-test.info/index.php?sid=61524&newtest=Y
Also, depending on your personal situation, you could need more or less sleep or different sleep than others. Comparing ourselves to others can be useful when it is aspirational, but not if the conclusion is that there is something “wrong” with ourselves. Good luck in trying to figuring out the right set up for yourself!

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
