Our Winsor & Newton Designers Gouache workshop in partnership with Sketchbook Skool this past Saturday went quite well.  There were approximately 190 paid attendees with lots of engagement and lovely comments.  Suzan, the Sketchbook Skool moderator was a real pro and kept everything on track.

Many thanks to @mariagottfried for the screen shot.

    • Well done, Jimmy. Glad it was such a success. Will be great to expand on it and produce some more!

    • Great! Was this a Q&A or a real workshop where participants were following instructions? There are so many online educational platforms available and I think it is great to cooperate with the good ones out there. It gives a direct link to the artists/users of our products and is a great way to foster inspiration (and love for our brands and products). well done Jimmy!

      • It was what they call “live-ish” Jasper. The workshop itself was pre-recorded and then there are breaks at sections where I was brought on to answer questions live in addition to answering questions in the chat.

        • that’s an interesting set-up as well. nice! always good to have opportunity for participants to ask their questions, which can quickly become unmanageable with such a large group… but I am sure they were happy to have you on the call to answer all of them!

    • Never in doubt that this was going to be successful, well done Jimmy.

The Commercial Team enjoyed a morning of product training with the ever brilliant @StephanieNebbia on site in our Kidderminster DC where we were able to compare and experience the use of our acrylic, oil, watercolour and flashe paints.  It was difficult to get the group looking at camera as they were too engrossed in their painting to look up.  Excellent session enjoyed by all with some extremely talented artists.

    • Jan, you managed to capture a lot of great angles here of all the talented artists ; ) I agree it was a fantastic and very informative session led by Steph (and I know you did lots of organising behind-the-scenes too, so thank you to you also!)

    • It was great to learn about our different acrylics and the role each of them has to play, plus we got to try Flashe, which became an instant favourite with many of us. The team at Kidderminster were wonderful as always, it has been a long time since we were all able to be together so I think we all appreciated the time to reconnect and share, both the wins and the struggles, ready to face 2023! Thank you Steph and Jan for organising the hands-on training.

      • Huge thanks to you Jan for making the session possible, really appreciate all the organisation ahead of our arrival and thank you to everyone at Kidderminster for making us feel so welcome and immerse in all our brands and materials in preparation for 2023

    • looks great! It is really important for all of us to continue to learn about our products by using them, so this sounds like a great opportunity to do exactly that, and it is always fun to spend time with your team like this.

    • Flashe is the best kept secret amongst Acrylic painters. The potential growth for this sub-brand is enormous.

In the context of the recent brand positioning work we have been doing at W&N and our now stated commitment to supporting and sustaining art in the community,  I’d like to share this initiative from Tate. It’s further evidence that purpose-led brand action in the art world is real and we can all do something. Small steps – but in the right direction. From a consumer point of view it also made me feel a lot better about the £44 I just spent on two admission tickets – so a good job done all round by Tate! A lesson in how to work the ‘kindness economy’ for the coming year.

    • hi Jo, I love this and it really think it asks the question, what are we doing to support the inclusivity of art? Studying art is expensive but combine it with the cost of art materials and it’s prohibitive for students from under privileged back grounds. Would be good to hear ideas from people.

    • Just chipping here in to say that Steph has come up with the idea of an Art Bank with Toby!

Our view (as in the UK perspective) is that we should prioritise art schools over schools in general as very few of our products are aimed at children, and in many cases are not really suitable for them to use. We are not talking about giving out materials to privileged young adults that are doing an art degree because it’s a nice thing to do, this would be supporting education in an actionable way and has the potential of really changing lives by helping to make having a sustainable career as an artist a reality for those who currently it might not seem a possibility for. You are right Jane, the cost of materials is prohibitive to many that truly need them the most.

We would really like to formulate what the most meaningful ‘hierarchy of needs’ is when it comes to repurposing materials and would really welcome any other perspectives on this idea. While we are seeking to ‘inspire every artist in the world’ and part of the art bank could incorporate our existing charity donations, people who just come and go in terms of their contact with art and our materials should not really be our main focus here, should they?

    • Thanks for sharing Jo – fantastic initiative and great to see that they provide full 1-year employment contracts at a minimum, which clearly aims to give some stability in even more uncertain times.

    • Glad to see this prompted some discussion! Interesting ideas here and hope we can do something in this sphere to make the art world an accessible place for everyone.

Message from the NA DEI council and The Wellness Committee:

    NA COMMUNITY POTLUCK 2022

Food has the power to bring people together. There is nothing more communal than sitting down and enjoying a meal with someone. A simple dish can convey heritage and history, create connections, celebrate culture, and provide comfort. Food can forge friendships, tether someone to their homeland, spark memories of loved ones, and above all, create commonalities between strangers.

The Colart North America Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (NA DEI) Council and Wellness Committee hosted a “Community Potluck” yesterday where team members across the entire Colart NA business came together to enjoy food that was sentimental to them, from their culture or simply a favorite. Over 50 people brought dishes spanning mains, salads, sides, and desserts – and all were delicious! Containers were provided for everyone to take home leftovers and support sustainability. Fun was had by all conversing, listening to music representing many genres, and playing Bingo.

Thanks to everyone who participated and shared a special dish and to those who helped the councils set up and break down the space.

Special shout out to Duane Romanell and Maria Gottfried who photographed every single dish for a Community Potluck cookbook to be shared in the New Year and to Johnny Concepcion who compiled and played a custom playlist.

    Many voices. One Community.
