The Wall 3 years, 5 months agoSince September 2021, Colart Le Mans has been renting a warehouse right next to the main building. Here we store pallets of raw materials, components and finished products. When we needed to restock for a production run for example, we had to load a truck that must drive 1.2 miles along the main road to deliver to us, even though our two buildings are 0,06 mile apart!
We decided to eliminate this aberration by setting up a small train that links our two buildings. This small train can transport 6 pallets at the same time.
There are many advantages:
-Instead of receiving 40 pallets three times a day at once, alternating between a peak of activity and a quiet moment, they now receive 6 pallets every 30 minutes.
-We have also gained in reactivity: by being delivered every 30 minutes, we manage emergencies much better than when we were delivered every 4 hours.
-Eliminating trucks has reduced our carbon footprint from 2.5t CO2 per year to 0.2 CO2 per year and reduced our transport costs by £43000 per year
Better working conditions, better reactivity, ecological progress and cost reduction: everyone wins!

Great post Vincent.
This is an excellent initiative and great to see the specific calculations on CO2 reduction and cost savings. As you say there will be further savings in efficiency etc. A superb example of how Lean management and sustainability go hand in hand. Well done Le Mans!… -
and the train could possibly be repurposed when receiving visitors as a tour of the sites 😉
I like the improvements le Mans team are making continuously. This one sounds like a no brainer but needed some original thinking to come up with. Well done to all involved!… -

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
