The Wall 3 years, 6 months agoI read some pretty alarming news about plastic recycling in The Morning Brew: Less than 5% of US plastic was actually recycled last year, says Greenpeace (morningbrew.com)
Of note in this article is this: According to the report, less than 5% of all plastic waste that was discarded by Americans in 2021 (51 million tons) was recycled. That’s a significant drop even from the EPA’s 2018 estimate of 8.7%. Plastic recycling rates peaked at 9.5% in 2014 and have been declining ever since.
This means that it’s most important to produce less plastic in the first place.

The Wall 3 years, 6 months agohello all, please do check out the article on the Colart Community Day:-
Remember this day not only benefits you and Colart but also the cause you choose:-
- Extra pairs of happy-to-help hands mean more than small donations.
- New faces are uplifting for those who volunteer week in week out.
- To be helped by someone who helps ‘for the love of it’ feels positive and validating
- It elevates the cause to have a company like Colart donating people and time
and
- We’re all in this together – someday it might be you who needs the help.
…..so what are you waiting for? ☺

The Wall 3 years, 6 months agoHappy Diwali 2022!
Diwali, the festival of lights, joy, prosperity and happiness, is a religious observance commemorated by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains and some Buddhists around the world.
May this auspicious occasion light up your life with happiness, joy and peace. Happy Diwali!

Happy Diwali everyone! Interesting reading about attempts to limit fireworks and replace them with LED drone lights etc to reduce emissions and pollution which seems very logical – but I have to admit to being a sucker for a firework – maybe limiting it to public displays is the answer?…

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."

Good thought-provoking post Jimmy. This is partly institutional and partly mindset. In Europe post covid we have a shortage of suitable plastic for recycling and the big toiletry and household consumable companies are snapping up supply to be able put their shampoo’s etc into recycled packaging.Institutional issues often centre around contracts to supply waste to incineration plants. In UK some of these plants were built on borrowed money backed up by contractually guaranteed streams of waste from local authorities – long term that’s crazy economics. With regards to mind set I fear that some people perhaps do not hold the same views as those widely held in Europe. Step by step we shall overcome.
…
Jimmy, thanks for reminding us how little plastic gets recycled.
And on top of that, plastic takes 500 years to decompose! Compared to 1-2years for card. This has been the driver behind an innovation project Ajita and I kick-started last November with a specialist sustainability design agency. The project is called VacForm 2.0: to design a card vac form to hold and protect our most fragile aluminium tubes in sets.
With help from David Guay and Carole Castendet (and others) we are costing the samples up and transit testing them before the end of this year. We paid for a Life Cycle Analysis on our card v recycled plastic vac form and the card performed well.
We hope this will become a live NPD project very soon.
