Working both online and in real life, has increased the opportunities to work with our retailers nationwide. Being able to work directly with design students and designers offers opportunities to actually test and experiment with materials and palettes, providing a direct insight into their ways of working. In the past week training Cass on demystifying our watercolour mediums provided opportunities to revisit metallics and their relevance historically and also, in contemporary art and design. Working with design students and designers from Central St martins UAL meant we were able to share our audiences methods and needs with our retailers. It was a good example of the relevance of our materials to our retailers in the design context, increasing our engagement with future designers.…

The Wall 3 years, 7 months agoLeaders Plus
Just wanted to share that I spent a very enjoyable and thought-provoking morning yesterday at the Leaders Plus Line Manager’s workshop on behalf of one of my team who has recently returned from maternity leave and is currently one of the fellows.
I hadn’t come across Leaders Plus before I joined Colart a couple of months ago, but I was really impressed with the programme and the quality of discussion in both our pre-work and the sessions yesterday. The facilitator did a great job of mining some rich insights and learning around how we can better support working parents.
As a working mum with a young child myself, I’m so pleased to see Colart supporting this initiative, and I would encourage anyone with recent or imminent returners on their team to consider the programme! You can find out more at Leaders Plus – Supporting working parents to pursue their careers or speak to your local HR partner.

thanks for this post Helly!
We are really proud of our partnership with LeadersPlus which is open to both men and women in leadership roles with children. We are currently talking to LeadersPlus about how they could expand their offering (e.g. for non-English speakers and also people with older children) and we’ll keep you updated on how those discussions progress.

The Wall 3 years, 7 months agoHow to live and eat cheaply
Part 1 – Learn to love your slow cooker!
Most of us have a slow cooker at the back of our cupboard, and if you don\’t they are pretty cheap to buy (£16-£25). Consider getting one that will fit a small chicken or joint because even if cooking for a small household, you do not need to fill the pot the rest of the time, half full or less is fine.
If only cooking for 1 or 2, you can freeze portions for the days when you are in the office and want a quick tea.
Make sure you have a low and high setting and preferably a keep warm setting as well. You do not need to buy a branded one and they can last for years and years.
And here is the good news, they cost about 5p an hour to run and are great for making cheaper cuts of meat tasty and tender as well as non meat dishes.
If you are working from home, you can put a casserole on in the morning and by the end of the day your tea is ready, and you have the bonus of a lovely cooking smell all day.
They are simple to use, just brown off onions, meat and vegetables in a frying pan for a short while, add your herbs and spices, and some stock. Then pour into the slow cooker, put on the lid and leave for 5-8h. The liquid does not usually cook down too much so you might want to use flour to thicken it. There are lots of good recipes online, try BBC Good Food or Jamie Oliver. I recently did Beef Ribs (as I did not want to use my oven for 6h with the current costs) and they were great.
I am sure I am preaching to the converted, but if you are new to slow cookers, why not try one?

Here is a nice easy one Jane, it’s ‘Texas Style’……
Ingredients
1 teaspoon vegetable oil
1 (4 pound) pork shoulder roast
1 cup barbeque sauce (shop bought or homemade)
½ cup apple cider vinegar
½ cup chicken broth
¼ cup light brown sugar
1 tablespoon prepared yellow mustard
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon chili powder
1 extra large onion, chopped
2 large cloves garlic, crushed
1 ½ teaspoons dried thyme8 hamburger buns, split
2 tablespoons butter, or as needed (I don’t butter the buns).Directions
Pour the vegetable oil into the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the pork roast into the slow cooker; pour in the barbecue sauce, apple cider vinegar, and chicken broth. Stir in the brown sugar, yellow mustard, Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, onion, garlic, and thyme. Cover and cook on High until the roast shreds easily with a fork, 5 to 6 hours.Remove the roast from the slow cooker, and shred the meat using two forks. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker, and stir the meat into the juices.
Spread the inside of both halves of hamburger buns with butter. Toast the buns, butter side down, in a skillet over medium heat until golden brown. Spoon pork into the toasted buns.
Note:
The pork can also be cooked on Low for 10 to 12 hours vs High for 5 to 6 hours.…-

Absolute game changer. I use my slow cooker all the time. I even have one where I can change the inner crock section to one with two sections. This way I get to cook two different dishes for the same cost.…

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
