The Wall 3 years, 9 months agoDigital Accessibility update
You may have heard of the Digital Accessibility project through the fantastic training sessions we held earlier in the year. Hosted by All Able, our external accessibility consultants, we aim to turn those sessions into Colart Academy courses. These courses will also help answer the question \’What is Web/Digital Accessibility?\’.
Accessibility statements
One of our most visible milestones in this project has been publishing accessibility statements on our sites. It\’s a milestone a lot of companies don\’t get to, even after they start the initial work. I\’m proud to share that statements are now available for Colart\’s English site, and all Liquitex and Winsor & Newton sites. I\’d like to give a MASSIVE shout-out to Natalia Flindall, Stefano Maiorana, Gareth Meredith and Louise Booth. This achievement is all thanks to you and your contributions.
What is the point of the statement?
Statements list all the issues a visitor might encounter if they are using assistive technology or have accessibility needs. Assistive technology could include screenreaders. A requirement or need could be the ability to use a site without a mouse (keyboard only). The statements show that we are transparent about the limitations of our sites, that we\’re aware of our responsibility and upcoming tasks, and that we\’re doing something about them. They also provide a way for people to get in touch with us for more information.
How do we know what the issues are?
All Able audited our websites and drafted the statements. We rely on their expertise to keep us on track and deliver a service that will inspire every artist in the world.

Hi Claire, if I understand you well, this means we’re working towards our brand sites to be accessible for people with fysical impairments? I think that’s a great initiative. …
-
Yes, that’s correct! But not only temporary (eg: broken arm, cataracts) and permanent physical disabilities. Digital accessibility includes cognitive, situational (eg: loud environment) and technological (eg: old devices, bad network coverage). Here is a link to a TEDx talk that I thought explains it well: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O10GLNhf6_k…
-
oh cool. Thanks for the link! Will definitely have a look
… -
a very informative ted talk Claire. Thanks for sharing.
She mentions that the categories for disability are:
– Pain
– Flexibility
– Mobility
– Mental Health
– Dexterity
– Hearing
– Seeing
– Learning
– MemoryThis makes me think about the think tank idea from Daniel da le Fuente on making our packaging more inclusive for people with visual impairments, and if we should see that in a much broader perspective? Here’s the link to the think tank idea for those who are interested: https://intranet.colart.com/en/think-tank/visual-impairment-packaging/ …

Thanks for the summary Jasper – I am reminded reading about these categories of a charity which designs and commissions custom video game controllers for people with dexterity/pain/flexibility related disabilities. I wonder whether there are similar innovations within brushes, tubes, caps, etc?…
-
that is a great question to ask Jon… I can imagine that opening a tube (or worse, our mediums) can be a challenge when having such disabilities. Might be interesting to start googling.. ?

Well done team Shopper – I know that this has been a major undertaken as all of the data had to be reviewed one by one and much was incorrect. I am sure that the markets will find this an invaluable tool !…

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
