The Wall 3 years, 11 months agoHello all, happy Friday!
If you are based in London (or visiting!) do pop along to Elephant Space to view posters from the finalists in our LGBTQ+ & Inclusion art competition for children aged nine-15, held in conjunction with Hammersmith & Fulham Youth Council and construction company Kier.
Elephant Academy’s Emmely Elgersma had the brilliant idea to work with local schools on an open submission competition for Pride month. We had over 50 entries and narrowing these down to the top 10 was far from easy. Our finalists used a range of mediums and techniques (including digital art) to share visual responses to the subject of LGBTQ+ history, with winning designs touching on ideas of community, inclusion, family and gender binaries.
The posters will be on display at Elephant for the next month. We awarded the inaugural Elephant youth prize to three of our award winners, who will each receive a selection of art goodies from Elephant Kiosk, a cash prize from Kier and a creative mentoring session with Emmely.
Each poster has information about the artist and a QR code with more details on the competition. We will be welcoming the finalists and their parents to Elephant Space for official photos later in the month, but in the meantime do come over and take a look.

That looks amazing, well done team for coordinating this! It’s wonderful to be part of the local community in such a meaningful way – the mentoring session as a prize is a great idea!…

The Wall 3 years, 11 months agoI think everyone would agree that the Queens Platinum Jubilee celebrations were a fantastic success. My customer Star Print in Twickenham had their own way of showing appreciation for HRH, by getting their resident artist Paul ‘Don’ Smith to produce a very striking portrait using Liquitex spray paint.

The Wall 3 years, 11 months agoIf you are looking for some inspiration in how another company is evolving in their sustainability journey then beauty brand \’Tropic\’ is a good example: Infinite Purpose | Tropic Skincare:
- Carbon Neutral and now double offsetting to fund conservation work
- Zero waste to landfill
- Factory is 100% Renewable Energy
- Packaging is either Recyclable, Returnable or Refillable
- Replaced Plastic with \’Glass\’ where possible
- Use \’Aluminium\’ Tubes & Caps – infinitely Recyclable
- Innovation with a Patent ‘Balloon Insert’. Medical Grade Silicone . Recyclable. Insert can be retained and returned to their UK HO where it will be melted down for reuse. Glass Bottle infinitely recycled with no contamination. Pump & Lid made of PCR material (consumer retains).
- Font on Packaging – Now moving to ‘dyslexia friendly’ known as ‘Susie Script’ font after market research
- Tool to help roll the aluminium tube end – it helps push the tube content forward so it can be used up
- Packaging suited for gifting – FSC certification – recyclable – no glue used – printed with vegetable inks
I hope by sharing; it will inspire us all to look more holistically at what is possible for business today and the future for our colour category as we migrate forward in our sustainability journey.…

Karen Spinner replied 3 years, 11 months ago
Thank you for sharing, Sam. It just shows what is possible when you think sustainability first. I love the idea of the little tool to prevent waste. I take it Tropic is cruelty free/Leaping Bunny certified?…
-
Hi Karen, yes together with other sustainable aspects too e.g. ‘United World Schools’, ‘Carbon Neutral’, ‘Protect Land & Sea’, ‘Made in’ etc..…
-
Jane Beeston replied 3 years, 11 months ago
an interesting website with strong messages and I agree…food for thought for us…
-
Thanks for sharing Sam. I found the video that you sent me interesting especially the balloon pump refill system and her claims about glass & aluminium being better environmentally v plastic. We are doing more research here as glass & aluminium take huge amounts of energy & resource v plastic but of course here they are filling cosmetics which can be safely recycled. Where they do use plastic they are using certified PCR plastic. Lots of food for thought. Thanks for being a great sustainability Ambassador!

Thank you for sharing Sam! Stealing with pride is always better than ill engineered, so I always like examples that show how others are doing something well/better. Much appreciate you taking time to share with us and will have a closer look at this company for sure!…

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
