The Wall 3 years, 11 months agoYou may have seen news yesterday of the Mona Lisa being smeared with cake, an act of protest intended to draw attention to the climate crisis. Today in Elephant we published an opinion piece on why this type of drastic action to save our planet shouldn’t simply be dismissed out of hand. As the writer puts it, “Few paintings, including the Mona Lisa, are going to survive unmitigated environmental collapse. There’s no art on a dead planet.” You can read the full piece here: https://elephant.art/the-mona-lisa-cake-thrower-was-100-in-the-right-31052022/

Is it wrong that now I’m on a diet, all I can think of is ‘Mmmmmm cake’
More seriously though, acts like this do indeed raise ethical challenges and probably a sad reflection of the drastic steps that are now needed to get your voice heard in the world. The climate change movement has spent decades raising the profile of the uncomfortable truth of global warming and the need for a huge drive towards sustainability and yet even now at one minute to midnight (or more probably 5 minutes past midnight) we are still as a society dragging our heals.

The Wall 3 years, 11 months agoAs the upcoming Platinum Jubilee approaches, I wanted to share with you some great work we have done in partnership with Hobbycraft. I’m delighted to say the promotional end cap space has been landed in all 112 Hobbycraft stores and will be running until the end of July. With Jubilee-themed POS (as pictured) until June 6th, switching to Summer party-themed POS until the end of July, capitalising on summer events and festivities. This is the first time we have managed to secure promotional space outside of peak Halloween trade, initial buy-in and anecdotal sales have been an incremental success (+211% vs 2019).

Kidderminster Wellbeing posted an update in the group
The Wall 3 years, 11 months ago@Frances Holden suggested we could do something with old tyres by planting them up to brighten things up in our outside space at Kidderminster, so the wellbeing team got their heads together and found a lovely tea-cup idea on You-Tube. Kelly Potter and Sue Royall found the tyres and @David Hodgkins made these two amazing works of art by cutting them up and repurposing the old tyres then many staff helped to paint them. @Di Graham was appointed chief gardener, planting them up and to provide ongoing love and care. We think they look fantastic and make a fantastic, bright and attractive feature for the neighbourhood, hope you do too. Well done to everyone for a great team effort.

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
