The Wall 3 years, 12 months agoIs almond milk vegan? Not if bees are killed to make it.
Itโs Sustainable Wednesday and as a sustainability ambassador I was invited to share a post here on the Wall.
As the topics to choose from are endless and as everything we do has an impact on our environment, I would like to share the website โSum ofUsโ with you, which showcases many interesting campaigns on sustainability, environmental polution, child labor e.g.
SumOfUs is a non-profitable community of people from around the world committed to curbing the growing power of corporations when needed.
The following link brings you to a page on the killing of bees while growing almonds.
You might think your almond milk is vegan, but not as long it is killing bees!
Stroll around the website from there and find any other great campaign.
Please join me in signing the below petition to stop the killing of our beautiful and useful bees and show the EU that people across Europe wonโt let them ignore our bee-saving laws.
https://actions.sumofus.org/a/protect-the-bee-saving-ban-on-toxic-pesticides-19-20?source=campaigns
We have worked hard to ban bee-killing pesticides in Europe. Now, new research shows that the giant multinationals Bayer, Syngenta and BASF are undermining that by exporting them worldwide.
From Brazil to India, they secretly make a profit on the killer chemicals they are not allowed to sell at home. The result is that bees are dying en masse and that we here too get food on our plates that is covered with a layer of pesticides.
So here is a question:
If companies like BASF, from which we buy pigments, are mentioned and involved, whatโs our companyโs perspective here on companies that undermine our nature and future like this?
Does it fit our sustainability goals to do business with companies which behave like this?
Or donโt we even have a choice and canโt we do without if we want to manufacture our paint?
Maybe we can at start a dialogue?
For now, please sign the petition to save our bees now we still can
and check your milk 😉
Have a nice day,
Best,
Robert

OMG what a wake up call this is!! Thanks so very much for sharing this information Robert. As an oat milk drinker, I’m off to investigate that the process is not the same. I’m NEVER EVER drinking almond milk again and with Alpro being one of the biggest providers of alternative milks in the UK – I’m personally banning any purchase of their product. I’d rather drink water than support these terrible practices.
Your questions supports so much stimulation for thought. It’s so worthy of a group discussion. How about we set up a Teams meeting in the coming weeks; invite anyone who is interested to join; you can pose the questions and then start the dialogue? High five for igniting sustainability today, Robert!…

Thank you Gareth, it will be a challenge to live around this though, as for the most part the regular food industry is making use of pesticides like this. It’s mostly biological farming avoiding any pesticides. The petition is about lawmaking and at least keeping companies to stick to the agreements come to so far. A meeting, yes!

Thanks for this thought provoking post – you are right, where do we draw the line if our key suppliers are endorsing these practices? …

Great post Robert – and signed. Hideous business – like any large-scale, industrialised type of agriculture that treats living creatures as commodities. To add too that almond milk is pretty much the worst choice of alternative milk you can drink as it uses an obscene amount of water in its production. And Gareth, don’t worry – oats are pollinated by the wind (same with wheat and barley), so no need for insect intervention.…

Whilst I totally agree on the need to protect bees and I view myself as a passionate but pragmatic sustainability advocate, we have to understand the importance of pesticides in providing sufficient food to feed the worlds population. Like it or not, they are an essential part of agriculture and there would be large scale harvest failures without them.
In the wealthier countries we have the luxury of having relatiively secure food production which affords us the privilege of being able to make decisions on what we feel is acceptable and what is not. Even then, neonicotinoids which have been banned in europe are actively used in the UK right now (https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-60579670).
Many less privilged parts of the world do not have this option, people need to successfully grow crops to both feed themselves and also sell food to other countries, including our own, to generate revenue. It can be a choice as simple as starve or use pesticides and herbicides to achieve a successful harvest.
For us to achieve a sustainable future we have to change our mindset, radically reduce meat consumption, invest signifcantly more in researching less harmful crop treatments and use genetic modifications (controversial I know) to improve plants own self defence mechanisms. We also need to be prepared to subsidise poorer parts of the planet in having affordable access to advances.
I also see a big future for hydoponic farming where food can be produced in a contained environment free from pests and weeds with the additional benefit of minimal fertiliser run off which is also incredibly damaging to the environment
The alternative is to accept increasing food instability that in turn can leave to starvation, population migration and war.…

Great post Robert. The central valley in California is an agricultural wonder of the world and helped feed America (and the world) but its been abused and plundered and the almond industry is a sad example of this. Farmed well it can continue to feed USA . The mass transportation of bees is something most people have no idea about and should be better controlled. For sure they are needed if we want to continue to eat fruit and other bee pollinated products and live in cities. In Europe we have the issue of neonicotinoids. It seems to be easy for EU countries & UK farmers to press for emergency approvals for use despite the fact that its now known that they impact bee colonies and the wild insect population. …

thanks for bringing this to our awareness Robert. As always, the solutions might not be simple (see Toby and Richard’s comments) but it all starts with awareness and the start of a conversation. What might be an in between solution is thinking about the smalles improvement we could make, for example choosing different kinds of plant based milks, signing the petition or paying a little extra for a brand that does things differently. I also want to use this spot to give a shout out to all of the ambassadors who have been posting such interesting sustainability based topics. Really makes me think. Thanks!…

Teamwork is essential to all of us at Colart. The pleasure was all mine. Without the buy in of the team at Kidderminster it would not have happened. Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
