The Wall 4 years agoAs a newly volunteered Sustainability ambassador, I was asked to share a sustainability tip here as part of the “Sustainability Wednesday” rhythm. Appreciate this is a day late (sorry Ajita), but here goes:
Sustainability means different things to different people, and while the mass consensus focusses on the “environmental” aspects (which is arguably the most important), I feel something that gets understated here is “self sustainability” – for a happier, healthier, long term self sustenance.
Most of us will agree to feeling overwhelmed on a more regular basis recently, especially as we bounce back from the Covid-19 slowdown and play catchup with different aspects of our lives. As part of managing this overwhelm, I began following the group “Action for Happiness” since Jan-22, to slow down and appreciate the smaller things in life on a regular basis, and while some of the tips here may sound trivial – I have seen a significant impact on my ability of slow down and help refocus – which I would recommend as many of you as possible to give it a try (even in your own ways if you done particularly feel the need to join the movement).
Their monthly activity calendar is something I look forward to using diligently, and hope this gives some inspiration
to you all too! -

The Wall 4 years agoThe road to no single use plastic is quite arduous. I blew my vacuum cleaner up at the weekend so a purchase was needed. The new vacuum came with no single use packaging and clearly thought had gone into this. I was surprised though that there were 17 separate pieces of paper or cardboard with many different sizes of paper bags so clearly room for improvement but also food for thought in how we do things in Colart

Thank you Richard and yes there is always room for improvement. According to this article https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2010/mar/31/plastics-cardboard , “In the longer run, a ‘closed loop’ recycling system using plastic crates is infinitely more environmentally sustainable than one based on cardboard boxes.”
More food for thought as we need to get to the best solutions.…-

What an interesting article Dennis, thank you for sharing. Duly bookmarked.…

I am surprised they haven’t moved to plastic crates already. A fully loaded Waitrose Tesco or Sainsburys van that uses plastic crates not left with the customer completely wins over the suburban drive to the store and loading up your groceries yourself especially if its an electric truck. Automobile and aerospace assembly factories use returnable crates as well. None of this is single use but difficult to relate to our industry unless we could work something out with retailers? …

Richard Llewellyn replied 4 years ago
Hi Daniel, thanks for your comments. Some of our sets have gaps in them or Artists like to swap out colours so the need for the plastic cup is there and its not single use. We are looking at ways to avoid wrapping the pans in plastic but this is proving difficult so far. Of course the pans themselves are used for some time so are not single use. …

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
