The Wall 4 years agoIn the early morning on April 17, we, the staff in Shanghai, got a big surprise. A love package arrived suddenly, including the vegetables and meat. It’s certainly a timely source of help.
Great thanks to the company, who is caring about us. Great thanks to the colleagues, who are thinking of us and helping us.

“Green Alternative Plastics” and their biodegrading levels
While awareness of the detrimental impact plastic can have on the environment has exploded in recent years, environmentally friendly alternatives now picking up steam. Biodegradable plastics are one set of materials that are becoming a popular replacement as consumers demand green alternatives. This is derived from biodegradable polymers made from plants rather than fossil fuels and depending on the application, there are plenty to choose from however not all biodegradable plastics decomposed in the same environmental conditions. For those who are doing “home composts” not all biodegradable wraps/packaging can be used.
Below is a great tool to understand how to dispose of bioalternative plastics when you see them in your households.Acronyms:
PBS: Polybutylene succinate
PLA: PLA or Polylactic acid is made from dextrose (sugar) extracted from biobased materials. It is the most popular bioplastic or biopolymer and the only one currently produced on a world scale plant.
PBSA: Poly(butylene succinate)
PBAT: poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT)
PHB: poly(hydroxyalkanoate) (PHA), a biodegradable plastic produced by microorganisms . manufacture of pots, spoons, and plastic bags, among other objects, and possess properties similar to polypropylene.-

Thanks for sharing Cris. This highlights the confusing situation with plastics. Technology is moving fast but Reduce – Reuse – Recycle in that order is always the best way forward…

Jasper Van der Wurff replied 4 years ago
I was about to point out the same thing Richard. How complicated can it get?
Each time we do not buy (what we do not need) or reuse what we can, we avoid the issue of the product not being disposed of correctly. At the same time, the thought of biodegradable and therefore better alternatives to known pollutors being developed is also hopeful. Maybe many small steps can get us to a long lasting solution?… -
Steve Chamberlain replied 4 years ago
Yes, reduce and reuse has to be the start point (and as consumers it isn’t that hard for us all to do more of….). …

Claire van Blerck replied 4 years ago
This is great Cris, One to print out and stick on the fridge, that’s for sure. I’d be keen to test the Fresh Water breakdown as a little home experiment and see what the packaging looks like after 54 days. I’ll see if any of my purchases fit the bill.…

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
