Today, in Honor of Black History Month, the DEI council showcases Alma Woodsey Thomas (September 22, 1891 โ€“ February 24, 1978) Thomas was an African-American artist and teacher who lived and worked in Washington, D.C., and is recognized as a major American painter of the 20th century. Thomas is best known for the “exuberant”, colorful, abstract paintings that she created after her retirement from a 35-year career teaching art at Washington’s Shaw Junior High School.
Thomas is often considered a member of the Washington Color School of artists but alternatively classified by some as an Expressionist. She earned her teaching degree from University of the District of Columbia (known as Miner Normal School at the time) and was the first graduate of Howard University’s Art department, and maintained connections to that university through her life. She achieved success as an African-American female artist despite the segregation and prejudice of her time.

Amanda E. White LPC (author of the only book I will never read for sure with the haunting title โ€˜Not Drinking Tonight โ€“ A guide to crating a sober life you love) shared something on her Instagram that I found interesting enough to share:

โ€œMost people donโ€™t give good advice.
Why? People typically give advice based on their experience and values.
They donโ€™t recognize that this is their biased point of view. They just assume itโ€™s โ€œrightโ€.
They donโ€™t realize that you may have different values or priorities than them.
If they canโ€™t articulate why they have this belief and canโ€™t separate their own experience from yours, donโ€™t take their advice.
They are likely just projecting their experience onto you.โ€

This got me thinking: do I listen, empathize and reflect before giving advice to others ?
Or do I just jump straight into solution mode (โ€œthis is what you should doโ€) ?

📗📘📙📕 Snazaroo UK is celebrating and highlighting transformational play & the joy of creative imagination in the lead-up to World Book Day (3rd March 2022).

Below are a few snippets of some of the activations that are already live or will be coming up in the next few weeks… including a brand new snazaroo.com/uk World Book Day bundle which launched today.

Fun fact: This year marks World Book Dayโ€™s 25th anniversary and the theme is โ€œYou are a readerโ€!

What was your favourite book or book character as a child?

    • Great work once again Francheska! I was a big fan of Nancy Drew when I was young!

    • My favourite book was ‘The Tiger Who Came to Tea’ when I was child ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Mine were a mix of Belgian & Russian books. But I vividly remember The Adventures of TinTin and I also loved a Russian folk tale of The Firebird

    • Great asset creation and comms Francheska. Well done. My favourite book is Frog & Toad Are Friends

    • Love this Francheska – my favourites through the years Topsy & Tim then Sweet Valley High and then Harry Potter – probably giving my age away now 🤣

    • Love this Francheska! So my favourites were the Worst Witch books, the Jill series (all about ponies!) and The Saddle Club books. Anything with ponies or witches, basically!

    • I was a Famous Five fan and progressed to all things Agatha Christie. Love a mystery!

    • Wonderful thing to do, to encourage children to read books.
My favourite was โ€œThe Wishing Chairโ€ by Enid Blyton.
Thoroughly recommend it to those with young children, ideal bedtime stories.

    • Very colorful work.

    • I’m loving the new colourful backgrounds on the Snazaroo assets! I still strongly identify with Alice from the Lewis Carroll book Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland and I was also a huge fan of the Disney animated film.

    • The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe and the Penguins Book Of Children’s Verse. One of my children has never been able to read a book cover to cover, but has turned out to be a successful storyteller in film, now she’s all grown up. It’s the power of stories to unlock the imagination that matters – however they are told. As suppliers of art materials, I think we are all in the business of storytelling and words aren’t always the way, for everyone. Its what paint and canvas can do just as well. My knowledge of what’s in the Bible comes almost exclusively from galleries ( never listened much at school), Cindy Sherman’s photographic art gives many back stories into a slice of the American contemporary culture I knew nothing about and David Hockney’s narratives around nature work fully as stories for me. But still, I love Wold Book Day as a big global ‘thumbs up’ for reading, for those who can and do. Thank you, Francheska for making me think about this.

    • Enid Blyton’s The Famous Five and The Folk of the Faraway Tree…. And yes, the assets look great and it’s a shame that World Book Day doesn’t seem to resonate or have any major traction in the USA still.

    • To read to my children – the Lorax by Dr Seuss. It really helps children understand about the harm we as human beings can and have done to this beautiful world. The Lorax truly is an eco warrior and the Once-lers mantra of i’m figurin on biggerin is the epitome of selfishness

    • The Secret Garden, Ballet Shoes and also the whole Narnia Chronicle !! Clearly I’m old school ….

    • Pippi Longstocking! Super strong and clever and kind (and rich with a bag of gold under her bed)

Last week the Wellbeing Team received these 2 lovely cards from the mental health units we sent art materials to over the Christmas period – both units loved their xmas boxes and were so appreciative of the products! It’s so great to see the positive impacts of Colart products ๐Ÿ™‚

I just wanted to thank everyone who donated items before Christmas, as well as to Mark Brindle and the Lowestoft team who donated loads of brushes, and Charlotte Caton and Viktoria Saplaoura who packed all the bags so beautifully!
