The Wall 4 years, 2 months agoHello everyone, I do hope you are all keeping well.
One of my key objectives for the year ahead is to keep on communicating all about the wonderful and fast-moving world of Elephant. I’m very much aware that a lot has changed at Elephant over the years and that we always have a lot of new projects on as part of our test-and-learn function for Colart.
In order to help improve the way Elephant is communicating with the rest of the business, we’ve created a simple – and very visual – Elephant cheat sheet, which can be viewed in full here: https://intranet.colart.com/en/news/elephant-cheat-sheet/
We’ll be adding a sustainability cheat sheet to the list in the coming weeks, plus I’ll be sharing a 2022 brand pack with all commercial and brand teams. I’m also looking forward to presenting a business update to all you, alongside the rest of the Elephant team, at the Town Hall on 15 April.
Finally, I’d love to hear your thoughts on how Elephant is being communicated across Colart. I am always available and open to hearing your feedback, ideas, thoughts and musings on all things Elephant.

The Wall 4 years, 2 months agoToday, in Honor of Black History Month, the DEI council showcases Christopher Ofili, (born 10 October 1968) Ofili is a British Turner Prize-winning painter who is best known for his paintings incorporating elephant dung. He was one of the Young British Artists. Since 2005, Ofili has been living and working in Trinidad and Tobago, where he currently resides in Port of Spain. He also lives and works in London and Brooklyn.
Ofili has utilised resin, beads, oil paint, glitter, lumps of elephant dung, cut-outs from porn magazines as painting elements. His work has been classified as “punk art.” One of his paintings, The Holy Virgin Mary, a depiction of the Virgin Mary, was at issue in a lawsuit between the mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, and the Brooklyn Museum of Art when it was exhibited there in 1999 as a part of the “Sensation” exhibit. The painting depicted a Black Madonna surrounded by images from blaxploitation movies and close-ups of female genitalia cut from pornographic magazines, and elephant dung. Red Grooms showed his support of the artist by purchasing one of Ofili’s paintings in 1999, even after Giuliani famously exclaimed, “There’s nothing in the First Amendment that supports horrible and disgusting projects!”-
Incorporating animal dung…. mmm Indian yellow springs to mind …
-
What a great artist to highlight, one of my all time favourites and also the first Black Turner Prize winner! If anybody based near London wants to see some of Ofili’s work, his painting ‘No Woman No Cry’ is exhibited in the Tate Britain. The painting is inspired by/depicts Baroness Doreen Lawrence, who’s son Stephen Lawrence was killed in an unmotivated racist attack in South London, and was key to securing police reforms and improving race relations legislation in the UK. It really is an incredible piece to see in person, and along with a lot of his art puts black women and culture front and centre, in spaces where representation is often lacking.

The Wall 4 years, 2 months agoNEW NE NEWS: MEETING-FREE-MONDAY!
In 1979, the band The Boomtown Rats released a song called “I Don’t Like Mondays”. Coincidence or not, it was from the album “The Fine Art of Surfacing”.
If Bob Geldof would work for Colart Northern Europe (NE) nowadays, we would sing “I Do Like Mondays”, because as from now, we introduce Meeting-Free-Monday in NE!
Monday is the most productive day in the week, which we will only use to be productive.
So, nobody in the NE Team will schedule and/or join any meeting, Teams-call or whatsoever with more than 2 people on any Monday any longer. This will help us all to focus, to be efficient and productive in delivering our ambitions.
And we will enjoy it!

Love this idea Piet – would be great to see how you get on …

Except of course a call with me !!…
-
Piet van Nassau replied 4 years, 2 months ago
That’s no more than 2 Gail! 1:1 calls are more efficient than anything else nowadays, so they are excluded!…

Interesting stats Piet, which I’d like to challenge. I don’t believe mondays to be the most productive, but cancelling all your meetings might help. let me know how this evolves!…

Karen Spinner replied 4 years, 2 months ago
Interesting stuff, Piet. I book out one meeting-free day a month (and encourage all Elephants to do the same) and I usually end up selecting a Monday, although like Jasper I’m not sure this is the most productive day of the week (for me). Looking forward to hearing how it goes.…

Piet van Nassau replied 4 years, 2 months ago
No meetings on Mondays will make it the most productive day of the week Karen, although all surveys I’ve seen tell me that this is already the case.…

I will finally start living the way I want
I mean, of course I agree it’s a good idea
“meeting” is a “key word” in corpolife since always, but not always the most effective way of working… -
Ruben Nunkoo replied 4 years, 2 months ago
Hi Piet, Very interesting and a good idea. It might even help to focus everyone on the meetings that you do have during the remaining days. It will also mean those colleagues that would normally schedule a meeting will have time back also, so a win-win for everyone.…

So this has sparked alot of interest from me personally as I don’t feel that Monday is my most productive day either. So off I went to good old faithful google and my searches found Tuesday to be the most productive https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/what-day-week-employees-most-productive-wasim-khan/ – this aligns much better with me. However, in saying so, I believe there are so many personal variables that determine what makes a productive day – your work preferences; the tasks and duties that you carry out; the type of work you do (e.g. somebody’s least busiest day could be another persons most busiest day). Therefore, I think it is important to recognise that we are all individuals and our personal preferences need to be considered.…

Looking forward to hearing how it progresses. On the other hand- since Monday is already productive according to the results- should the focus be Friday/ Thursday and how to improve it?…

I love the concept!…

Jimmy – I love this approach and hearing from Ryan! Really fascinating to think about the use of flora and headdresses from different cultures as well as Ryan’s different use of media depending on circumstance! Thank you for sharing and welcome again Ryan! …

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
