    • So Jimmy and I were in the office this week and got to meet the wonderful Brandy in person and it got us talking…….how cool would be it be we could introduce Brandy to the the rest of Colart as part of her induction. So here you go thanks @Jimmyleslie for embracing this and testing it out. More to come in the future – open to feedback so we can continue to evolve this approach. For me I’d love to hear more about new team members backgrounds and in this instance relationship with materials.

    • WOW- I just watched the video and was really nice to see and hear Brandy, and get a peek into her journey as an artist. Love incorporating this into new hire inductions. Thanks for initiating this, Jimmy and Sarah. And welcome to the Colart team Brandy! Looking forward to meeting you in Piscataway.

    • great video and initiative!….let’s all “go with what makes us feel awesome!”

    • Was a pleasure to meet Brandy. She was really soaking a lot in that day in the office. You could sense her level dedication.

Black History Month bonus edition courtesy of Duane Romanell: Today in honor of Black History Month, the DEI council showcases Richard Mayhew (born April 3, 1924). I was unaware of Mayhew until Duane wrote to me saying that he was enjoying the Black History Month posts and was learning about some artists that were unknown to him. Then he shared Mayhew’s work and I was in immediately in love with his use of color. Mayhew is a landscape painter, illustrator, and arts educator. His abstract, brightly colored landscapes are informed by his experiences as an African American/Native American and his interest in Jazz and the performing arts.
Mayhew studied at the Art Students League of New York and later attended the Brooklyn Museum Art School in 1948 to 1959. He was a Jazz singer in the 1950’s, performing in small clubs in New York City and in the Borscht Belt in the Catskill Mountains. In 1955 he had his first solo exhibition in Brooklyn, and he ended his singing work.
Mayhew’s work is featured in various permanent collections including: San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, De Young Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Smithsonian Institution, among others.

Sharing more palette knife experiments with the new Liquitex Heavy Body colors. While there are some bright hues in the new additions I find the beauty in the subtle mixtures that lend themselves to variations in snow scenes. This one is the long path to dig from my house to my studio.

Today, in Honor of Black History Month, the DEI council showcases Jacob Armstead Lawrence (September 7, 1917 – June 9, 2000) Lawrence was an American painter known for his portrayal of African-American historical subjects and contemporary life. Lawrence referred to his style as “dynamic cubism”, although by his own account the primary influence was not so much French art as the shapes and colors of Harlem. He brought the African American experience to life using blacks and browns juxtaposed with vivid colors. He also taught and spent 16 years as a professor at the University of Washington.

Technically, on somebody else’s wall Wednesday…

Here’s an interesting little piece on color/textile design sent to me by a friend, of a factory in Uxbridge, Middlesex (circa 1968). For those not in the know, it was produced by British Pathé, who created newsreels and documentaries between 1910-1970.

My favorite line – “Here’s where modernity pokes its ugly but useful head…”

    • This is such a gem and a great look into the beautiful colors in an art related industry.

    • Thanks for sharing Duane. The business is still flourishing and now holds many famous brands such as Morris. The blocks shown as well as early William Morris designs are all archived and many are still used. Great to see on their careers page the use of W&N Cotman colour – shame about the brush but good to see the commercial creative sector thriving and needing future commercial artists

      • Thanks for sharing that info, Richard. I had no doubt the facility would still be in operation (although I pictured some of those same gruff-looking characters STILL operating the machinery!). I love how – featured in the video above, as well as on the link you provided – there is a designer sitting at their drafting table as they’ve always done, working on pattern, separated by 54 years! Some things never change.
