The Wall 4 years, 3 months agoHere’s a neat little article from the Metropolitan Museum of Art on conservation of Disney animation cels. Gouache and watercolour would be used by artists on the celluloid and while Winsor & Newton is not specifically mentioned, I’m thinking that some of the cels from 1937, referenced in the article might have been painted with the Designers Gouache range introduced that year.

The Wall 4 years, 3 months agoWe are so excited to share more of the story of the WN x The Drawing Factory partnership!
Working in collaboration with the French team, who organized this amazing relationship for Winsor & Newton in Paris, we expanded our support of young and emerging artists in a unique residency. Beginning in March 2021, The Drawing Factory transformed a hotel awaiting renovation in the 17th arrondissement into a hive of artists studios where 33 artists were in residence for 6 months. During this time, we put our community-building ethos into action with workshops for the artists and ongoing materials support, which allowed the artists to experiment freely – they all said this freedom was a huge boost for their development.
There, we met several of the artists and had the opportunity to hear firsthand how the residency helped their practice and how crucial the time was because it allowed them to develop a network with the other artists. While this was a graphic arts residency, the artists had fine art practices based in drawing materials and it was fascinating to see the variety of work that was being made! Every surface of the studios, from the ceiling to the walls and the floor, was used as a surface for drawing.
Several films are coming out, the first one is on our site (https://www.winsornewton.com/na/articles/art-techniques/winsor-newton-x-the-drawing-factory/), and the others will be rolling out in the coming weeks!

Our sustainability agenda for the W&N brand includes people based initiatives as well as planet. Anything we can do through our partnerships with organisations, institutions and other brands that helps sustain and support artists in the community counts towards these efforts. This initiative, orchestrated by Rebecca and organised by the French team kicks the community theme in our brand communications for 2022 off really well in this regard – as it gave us the opportunity to support young and emerging artists as they look to network and develop their careers. We have more to come like this across the year – watch this space!…

I once ran some training courses for writing creatives and Ad guys with an amazing writer and trainer who said that everyone should be born with a limited number of exclamation marks and once you had run out you couldn’t have any more! I would have run out long ago. She was right that they are overused… (I really wanted to put another one there).…

The Wall 4 years, 3 months agoDEI council news: In seeking to hire new TFAC artists I am connected with the New York University recruitment center. I was very interested to learn from their recent email that they host an equity & inclusion recruitment event. This was something that I was unaware which shows me that the more you become involved in something the more you learn and the more you become aware of things that might have otherwise gone unnoticed, hence the importance of our Colart DEI Councils.
Here is a link from NYU that shares why diversity in the workplace is important: https://www.nyu.edu/students/student-information-and-resources/career-development-and-jobs/employers/recruit-diverse-talent-at-nyu.html?lor=8&utm_source=mass_mailer&utm_medium=email&utm_content=1009033&utm_campaign=uni_targeted_emails-

Millions of tonnes of clothing, shoes and other textiles end up in landfill every year because very little is sent for recycling .
“The current fashion system uses high volumes of non-renewable resources, including petroleum, extracted to produce clothes that are often used only for a short period of time, after which the materials are largely lost to landfill or incineration. “This system puts pressure on valuable resources such as water, pollutes the environment and degrades ecosystems in addition to creating societal impacts on a global scale.” There are good reasons to seek out alternatives to chucking clothes in the bin – globally the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of all greenhouse gas emissions, with textile production alone is estimated to release 1.2 billion tonnes of greenhouse gases into the atmosphere every year. Vast amounts of water are also needed to produce the clothes we wear too and the fashion industry is responsible for 20% of global waste water. At the same time we are buying more clothes than ever – the average consumer now buys 60% more clothing than they did 15 years ago. More than two tonnes of clothing are bought each minute in the UK, more than any other country in Europe. Globally, around 56 million tonnes of clothing are bought each year, and this is expected to rise to 93 million tonnes by 2030 and 160 million tonnes by 2050.
"Reuse. Recycle. Rethink — your clothes deserve a second life, not a landfill."
