The great writer James Baldwin on the role of the artist:

“Perhaps the primary distinction of the artist is that he must actively cultivate that state which most men, necessarily, must avoid: the state of being alone. That all men are, when the chips are down, alone, is a banality — a banality because it is very frequently stated, but very rarely, on the evidence, believed. Most of us are not compelled to linger with the knowledge of our aloneness, for it is a knowledge that can paralyze all action in this world. There are, forever, swamps to be drained, cities to be created, mines to be exploited, children to be fed. None of these things can be done alone. But the conquest of the physical world is not man’s only duty. He is also enjoined to conquer the great wilderness of himself. The precise role of the artist, then, is to illuminate that darkness, blaze roads through that vast forest, so that we will not, in all our doing, lose sight of its purpose, which is, after all, to make the world a more human dwelling place.”

Liquitex Bio-Based had a fun debut in the Granville Island, Vancouver location of Opus Art Supplies!  NA Marketing partnered with Opus to officially launch Bio-Based to their artist community in Vancouver with a private, after-hours event held at their store.  We invited some of their top acrylic users, local artists and influencers, and those who value sustainable choices in their work.  The energy of ‘Just Imagine’ permeated through the room as guests got their hands on Bio-Based at several try-it tables, engaged with a local Vancouver artist, Charlie Easton, and learned more about our conscious efforts to bring sustainable options to their toolkit.  Every attendee left with a sample of Bio-Based and Recycled Canvas, and majority of guests took advantage of our promo for the night, which was a GWP of Liquitex swag and product!  It was a fantastic opportunity to get face-to-face with the artists that drive the passion we all have for our brands and a fun reminder of the impact we are making in the art community.

    • really cool to have a launch like that. Well done!

    • This was an amazing event – well done Jen and all involved. The passion and energy from our team, the team from Opus and all the creatives was fantastic – some great sales on the night too, which has really energised Opus about the potential of Bio-Based. I know Tom, the CEO, is meeting with the AGA group early November and he will be pushing the agenda for us on Liquitex Bio-Based….

    • Congratulations to you and the team for bringing this successful event to life! It’s so exciting to hear the positive feedback on the Bio-Based range, and the event perfectly reflected the brand’s positioning. The insights you’ve shared—and those you’re continuing to gather—will be invaluable for future events. Well done!

    Happy Friday everyone,

When it comes to the education portion of my job at Colart I spend a good deal of time considering how to better communicate about our products with people in clear, concise ways.  To this point I received some post demo feedback from a college professor and after considering it, wrote an email to my team to also encourage them to ponder a bit.  I think it may have wider appeal to all Colart folks so I\’ve pasted it below for you – all the best, Jimmy

    Hi everyone,

I want to give you something to ponder based on some recent demo feedback.  Tony Zatzick performed a virtual demo for the Savannah College of Art & Design.  In the post demo evaluation sent to me from the professor, she spoke glowingly of Tony and then added some more general feedback which was not so much about what we do but rather her sharing her struggles as a professor.  She writes:

The one thing I’ve always struggled with in my virtual courses (and not just guest artist visits like this) is getting the students to feel comfortable to unmute themselves, interact more with the artist, and ask questions. I know this is the endless struggle of e-learning, but I think some students feel a sense of separation and anonymity when they’re in a Zoom course, and it’d be great to find new ways to overcome that.

I don’t know the exact answer to this except that maybe we can all consider how we set the tone whether in a virtual or in-person setting where this issue is prevalent as well .  We can certainly encourage people to ask questions but maybe we also need to remind them that not knowing or understanding something is not a weakness or vulnerability but rather simply the human condition.  In fact, asking a question with others present is a an admirable sign of confidence and strength.  Easy to say from a guy who’s had a lifetime to overcome such things and makes his living in public speaking but I think you get the idea.

Have a think about how you can set people at ease.  Maybe as you’re presenting it’s sharing the things that you once didn’t know but may have seemed obvious to others.  I’ve always felt that a good educator/communicator is one who isn’t afraid to not be cool.  In fact the teachers I remember who tried to be cool, often were not and the ones who wore their passions on their sleeves and weren’t worried about how that made them look were the ones I most admired.

Wishing you all a great weekend,

    Jimmy
