Dear all,
As we approach the end of the year and we hope for a new year free from COVID, there is one subject that we know that we will not be free from and that is Brexit. The UK as we know is in the process of exiting the EU and regardless of what we think about it, we know we must ensure those of you impacted by Brexit, are equipped to act to secure residence in the UK.
Currently, we are in a transition period where the rights of European nationals who wish to remain in the UK will remain unchanged. This transition period is due to end on 31st December 2020.
Any European national or their family members currently in the UK or who can provide evidence that they have resided in the UK before to 31st December 2020, should apply to register their status through the settled status scheme. The proof of residence in the UK must be dated in the last six months; therefore, someone who previously lived here in 2018/2019, would not qualify.
This evidence will enable you the right to continue to reside in the UK. You can apply for pre-settled status (if you have spent less than five years in the UK) or settled status (if you have spent more than five years in the UK). You can make an application up until 30th June 2021.
If you have not already applied for pre-settled or settled status, you can apply either through the mobile phone app. “EU Exit: ID Document Check”, available on apple or android phones, by post or by going to an identity document scanning location. You can find further information here.
From 1st July 2021, all European and non-European national employees will need to verify their right to work in the UK to continue to work in the UK. You can demonstrate this by either providing a visa document which confirms the right to work, or evidence of the grant of pre-settled or settled status.
Should you have any questions, please contact Harsa Beagley.
Many thanks.
Regards,
UK People Team
