The What
Following on from my post from Meiningers in Denver…..Our business, and the world these days, has many anagrams. Should we create a simple list that can help those who are unsure but want to find the answer themselves, for new starters too.
The Why
Employees can ‘self help’ from a simple list. As an example, I personally find myself ‘comfortable’ with things like WOC (Winton Oil Colour), POG (planogram) but a new employee may not. Likewise a new starter may be very familiar with CPE (cost per engagement), or ROAS (return on ad spend) but others longer in the business may be less familiar – and that is even before the challenge of English not being the first language for everyone.
The How
A central file in Teams or Intranet based, that individuals can update from time to time and have in categories for simple navigation.

Great idea Steve. Anything that makes the language we use clearer and more accessible has to be a good thing. Until reading your post I would have no idea what a POG was and I remember my first few months at Colart were spent Googling things I thought I should know and/or asking ‘which one’s DC4?’ etc.
I know Jasper has a sheet that he compiled with lots of suggestions following a Wall post last year – maybe it’s a case of revisiting that, keeping it in an easy-to-find spot and looking at translations?
Great idea, this is something that will benefit everyone at Colart.
I would suggest, for those outside of the art space, that some basic terms relevant to our industry are also included or covered in a separate document.
For example, knowing that POG stands for Planogram isn’t particularly helpful if you don’t know what a Planogram is (open question! :P); or why Cadmium-Free is important, or even the basic categories of our products such as Gouache!
I love this idea and think there could even be a help sheet for each specific area such as merchandising, digital, finance, logistics etc, as well as brand-specific ones for all our brands! I would personally find them very handy and also a great tool to share with new starters at any level.
This would be amazingly useful! I also second Francheska’s comment about help sheets for specific areas. We can certainly start having a think about any help tools we could introduce for our brand.
Love this idea. I’ve often been frustrated by the acronyms and abbreviations we use – particularly when they’re not universal and only hold meaning internally, (e.g. AOC, WOC, PWC), which make them particularly difficult for new starters to understand. Maybe this idea could be included as part of a wider plain English campaign, and an extension of our accessibility projects. http://www.plainenglish.co.uk/campaigning/examples/before-and-after.html
we have something in existence in the NA induction pack. I’ll be sure to reshare with our people team so that it can be more widely used across departments and markets.
Great idea – so has anything happened? Has this been added onto the intranet, if so where and who owns periodic review of it, etc?
