Winsor & Newton and Liquitex Partner with TerraCycle
We are proud to announce a pioneering partnership with international recycling leader TerraCycle® the launch of the Liquitex and Winsor & Newton Free Recycling Program in the United States.
This initiative provides artists with a way to recycle traditionally unrecyclable materials, such as used paint tubes and marker pens.
For generations, Winsor & Newton and Liquitex have supported artists with materials of the highest quality. Now, that commitment extends beyond creation to care for the environment. Through this program, artists can return their used Winsor & Newton and Liquitex products, knowing they’ll be recycled into materials that can be used to make new items—like outdoor furniture and storage containers.
Sarah Clark said
“We are thrilled to partner with TerraCycle on this important sustainability initiative,” “This program not only helps artists responsibly dispose of their used materials but also aligns with our commitment to a more sustainable future for creativity.”
Steve Chamberlin added:
“This partnership with TerraCycle is a significant step towards closing the loop on our materials. By providing artists with a responsible solution for end-of-life products, we are taking meaningful action to reduce waste and promote sustainability in the art community.”
Tom Szaky, Founder and CEO of TerraCycle, offered:
“Used art supplies, like paint tubes and markers, typically end up in landfills because they’re difficult to recycle through conventional systems. By working with Winsor & Newton and Liquitex, we’re making it easier for artists to manage this waste responsibly supporting both creativity and environmental progress.”
Program Details:
- What can be recycled: All Winsor & Newton tubes (e.g., oil, watercolor, acrylic) and Promarkers, as well as all Liquitex tubes and marker pens.
- How it works: Participation is simple: visit Winsor & Newton and Liquitex to sign up, and download a prepaid shipping label. Place the accepted items in any box you have on hand, apply the label, and ship it to TerraCycle. Artists are encouraged to squeeze out as much remaining product as possible before sending their used materials to TerraCycle. There’s no need to clean them and TerraCycle can handle the rest.
- What TerraCycle does: TerraCycle specializes in recycling hard-to-recycle materials. They break down the collected items and process them into raw materials like plastic pellets that can be used to make new products, keeping waste out of landfills and incinerators
The following is an immediate reaction from an artist on Linkedin:
As humans in 2025, we’re more conscious than ever about living sustainably — guided by the wisdom of Chief Seattle: “Take nothing but memories, leave nothing but footprints.”
But as artists, we also strive to leave a legacy. Our work often involves irreversible processes and materials (and packaging) that aren’t always recyclable — and yet, when something is meant to be treasured, we want it to endure.
That’s why I’m especially proud of this company — a brand rooted in tradition (they were the first to put paint in tubes!) — for embracing innovation in a meaningful way. Their commitment to rethinking packaging and reducing environmental impact is a powerful example of how even heritage companies can lead the way forward.
Sustainability and creativity can go hand in hand and I’m proud to use products from companies like Colart everyday in my work.
What a reaction!! We can see the resonance of this intiative to our consumers so a big well done to the team involved:
Persistence and collaboration sums up this team achievement…. you should feel proud as a team especially when you read the artist’s quote. So powerful 👏🙌
Wow what an impactful quote super fitting for an impactful programme like this.
This is really really exciting! Such an achievement!
Very good action for environment. It will be really interesting to see the quantities of products collected and to share this internally. Sure that a lot of people will be proud to work for a company able to act like that.
