Colart is proud to announce that we are the first art materials company to join the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and commit to its ambitious Net-Zero Standard.

This is a big milestone in our ongoing journey toward sustainability – and it’s something we can all be proud of. By taking this step, we’re not just focusing on reducing our emissions within our operations. We’re transforming the entire value chain, from how we source materials to how we get products into our consumer’s hands, making sustainability a core part of everything we do.

So, What Exactly Are Science-Based Targets?

Glad you asked! 🌍

Science-based targets give companies a clear roadmap for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions based on what climate science says is necessary to prevent the worst effects of climate change. Essentially, these targets help keep us on track to limit global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels – in line with the Paris Agreement.

To put it simply: they are realistic yet ambitious goals to help us do our part in saving the planet.

Our Net-Zero Commitment: What Does It Mean for Colart?

Here’s the plan:

  • Scope 1 & Scope 2 Emissions (Direct & Energy-Related): By 2035, we aim for Net-Zero in these areas, including everything from energy usage to operations at our sites. This means cutting emissions at the source.
  • Scope 3 Emissions (From Our Supply Chain & Transportation): By 2050, we will reduce emissions from the supply chain and logistics. This is the biggest challenge, as 90% of our carbon footprint comes from outside our direct operations – so we’ll need everyone involved.

As CEO Romain says, “The urgency of acting on climate change cannot be overstated, and we are taking bold steps to help mitigate the impacts.”

We’ve Already Made Progress – And We’re Just Getting Started!

Since 2019, we’ve reduced our Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by nearly 50%! This is just the beginning.

At our Le Mans site, we’ve already implemented green changes like:

  • Increased renewable energy use 🌞
  • Rainwater collection systems 🌧️
  • A 30% reduction in hazardous waste since 2019

This is a fantastic example of how Colart is leading the way – and it’s happening across the globe!

Collaborating with Our Partners

Did you know that 90% of Colart’s carbon footprint comes from our suppliers and partners? This means that to achieve Net-Zero, collaboration is key.

We’re already working closely with suppliers to understand and reduce Scope 3 emissions, and we’re optimising transportation logistics to make sure our products are shipped more efficiently. This includes reducing unnecessary transportation emissions through partnerships like the one with Amazon.

Innovating for a Greener Future

Sustainability isn’t just about cutting emissions – it’s about innovating for the long term. Colart is investing in cutting-edge solutions to reduce emissions from production and transportation. For example, our Kidderminster site now gets 41% of its electricity from solar panels, which reduces emissions by over 26,000kg annually.

And this is just one of many initiatives that make us believe a net-zero future is achievable.

As Sara Brennan, our Chief Innovation and Sustainability Officer, puts it: “Colart’s operational focus on sustainability shows that with targeted action, real change is possible.”

Setting the Bar for the Industry

Don’t forget – Colart was the first in the art materials sector to earn B Corp™ certification! That means we are setting a new benchmark for sustainability. By committing to science-based targets, we’re ensuring that our future actions are aligned with the latest climate science.

But this journey isn’t just about Colart. We’re working with suppliers, customers, and peers across the industry to create long-term sustainable solutions that benefit everyone – and the planet.

Looking Ahead: What’s Next?

So, where do we go from here?

In 2025, we will submit our targets to the SBTi for validation – a critical next step in our mission to reduce emissions and make a lasting impact. Our focus remains on supporting greener practices, driving innovation, and keeping sustainability at the heart of everything we do.

How Can You Contribute?
