The Global Regulatory Team's Crucial Role
However, their responsibilities go beyond the confines of compliance and regulations. Over the past few years, we've witnessed a surge in risks associated with chemical substances, particularly in response to initiatives like the EU Green Deal and EU Chemical Strategy on Sustainability. These developments have led national authorities to focus on specific products containing recently banned chemical substances, introducing a potential threat to our products' availability.
Introducing RAPEX and the Safety Gate
Watch the YouTube video below, which provides a clear explaination of RAPEX and the SAFETY GATE.
In the European Union (EU), the safety of products is paramount. Stringent laws and regulations are in place to ensure that only safe products reach the public. These standards encompass various aspects, from chemical safety to physical safety, and even environmental concerns.
RAPEX, the Rapid Alert System for Non-Food Products, and its counterpart, the Safety Gate, act as critical components in this regulatory framework. RAPEX serves as a rapid warning system that facilitates the swift sharing of information concerning unsafe products across European countries, excluding food items.
Each day, member countries send alerts to a central hub, the Safety Gate, which provides detailed information about the dangerous product, the risks it poses, and the actions taken by relevant authorities or companies.
Actions Taken When a Product Appears on RAPEX
When a product appears on RAPEX, authorities can take various actions, including:
- Removing the product from store shelves and changing its label if it's safe for other user groups.
- Stopping the product from being sold altogether.
- Refusing entry to the product at the country's border.
- Recalling the product from consumers who've already purchased it.
- Destroying the product if it poses a significant risk.

The Global Regulatory Team's Contribution
The Global Regulatory Affairs team's paramount objective is to keep our products safe, minimise the risk of appearing on platforms like RAPEX, and safeguard our brand's reputation. They actively monitor health and safety risks associated with the chemical substances used in our products and ensure compliance with the markets we serve. Their proactive efforts contribute to controlled risk for our business.
For further insights into the vital role our Global Regulatory Team plays in ensuring product safety and compliance, we invite you to watch the video where Cris Cosgrave, Head of Global Regulatory, shares valuable insights on how close we came to facing the RAPEX alert list.
For everyone interested, if you have a chance also have a look around the RAPEX website. As consumers we purchase different kinds of non-food products every day which may present a risk to us and to our families. The RAPEX site is a good place to explore, alerts are published every week and there is a search function to search all alerts by product name / brand / risk type / etc. What kinds of products appear more? What do the brands look like? Check it out!
